Sachin Dev Burman (1 October 1906 – 31 October 1975) was a notable Indian music director and vocalist. Hailing from the Tripura royal family, he embarked on his artistic journey within the realm of Bengali cinema in 1937. Gradually transitioning to composing music for Hindi films, he emerged as one of the most accomplished and influential music composers in the Indian film industry. Burman crafted scores for more than 100 movies, spanning both Bengali and Hindi cinema. In addition to his compositional prowess, he showcased his singing abilities in the light semi-classical and folk genres native to Bengal. Notably, his son, R. D. Burman, also made a name for himself as a revered music composer in Bollywood.
Burman’s compositions found resonance through the voices of prominent singers of his era, such as Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Shamshad Begum, Mukesh, and Talat Mahmood. Furthermore, Burman contributed as a playback singer, lending his voice to 14 Hindi and 13 Bengali film songs.
